Collins was a professional baker for New York and Polman's Bakeries in Mobile, Alabama. After many years he opened and operated his own shop known as Deluxe Pastry Shop in Prichard, Alabama. He was said to be very generous and for every doughnut he sold, he gave one away. Collins graduated from Thomasville Normal and Industrial High School. He was married to Bertha and from that union came four boys and four girls:
